  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar, optional

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Cook meat, onion, and carrots until meat is browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Stir in flour and tomato paste. Add broth and simmer until thickened.
  3. Stir in peas and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Spread in a baking dish and top with mashed potatoes and cheddar if using.
  5. Bake at 400 degrees until bubbling and browned.

Notes

  • Use lamb for shepherd’s pie, beef for cottage pie.
