  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar, optional
  • 3 tablespoons butter, optional

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Heat oven to 425 degrees. Whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar if using.
  2. Cut in butter if using. Add buttermilk and stir into a shaggy dough.
  3. Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet. Cut a cross in the top.
  4. Bake 35 to 45 minutes until browned and hollow-sounding.
  5. Cool before slicing.
