Stuffed cabbage, often called halupki in Pittsburgh-area families, is made with cabbage leaves wrapped around meat and rice and baked in tomato sauce.

  • 1 large head cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 large can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato sauce

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Core cabbage and simmer until leaves soften. Remove leaves carefully.
  2. Mix beef, pork, rice, onion, egg, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place filling in cabbage leaves, fold sides, and roll.
  4. Spread tomato sauce in a baking dish. Add rolls and cover with crushed tomatoes.
  5. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 hours.

Notes

  • Leftovers taste even better the next day.
